CIVIL WAR VETERAN’S TOP HAT, POST-WAR PHOTO & BUSINESS CARD

$295.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 725-23

This small group of items belonged to Private Edward Sutliff of Company K, 77th New York Infantry.

First in the group is an 1880’s or 1890’s photograph of Sutliff as an older man. He wears a dark suit jacket and trousers and a dark double-breasted vest. Just visible on his vest is a 6th Corps badge and a GAR Membership medal. There is also what we believe to be a white metal GAR bar pin attached to the lapel of his coat. He holds a very thin walking stick in one hand and on his head he wears a black top hat. Image has photographers name SCIDMORE, GLOVERSVILLE, N.Y. across bottom. Reverse has imprint for the same studio and in pen is “EDWARD SUTLIFF-MY GRANDFATHER. HUSBAND OF ELIZABETH SUTLIFF.” The image is clear but is dirty. Lower left corner is also bent some.

Attached to the image by an old paperclip is a business card for “FOULKS & CO. BANKING & COLLECTION HOUSE.” The card is in good condition and appears to date from around the same time as the photo.

The last item in the group is the top hat that Mr. Sutliff is wearing in the photograph. The hat has curved and raised edges like the one in the photo and a black band around the base. The interior has a wide oxblood sweatband and a label in the crown for “DUNLAP & CO. N. Y.” The exterior of the hat is covered in beaver fur and shows light to moderate wears on both the outside and underside of the brim. The stitching on the sweatband has rotted most of the way around but it is holding in place.

Edward H. Sutliff enlisted as a Private in Company K, 77th New York Infantry on September 29, 1861 at Gloversville, New York. At the time he was 39 years old. The regiment was assigned to the 4th Corps of the Army of the Potomac. In May of 1862 the regiment was transferred to the 6th Corps with which it served for the rest of the war and took part in all the major campaigns of that Corps from the Seven Days Battles before Richmond to Petersburg. Private Sutliff was captured at Fredericksburg during the Chancellorsville Campaign on May 3, 1863. He was confined in Richmond until paroled on May 15, 1863 at City Point. After his return to the regiment he was wounded in action at Spotsylvania on May 10, 1864. The record says he was absent when mustered out on June 27, 1865 but it does not make clear if he was still absent due to his wound or not.

This is an interesting little group with a wonderful GAR photo and a nice top hat.
