The subject is Lieutenant Albert A. Chittenden. He stands with one hand holding the back of a chair over which his greatcoat is draped. He wears a dark frock coat with 2nd Lieutenant shoulder straps and light trousers. In his right hand he holds his forage cap. Face has a light tint of red. Image is clear with great contrast. Bottom of mount is signed in period ink “ALBERT A. CHITTENDEN.”

Reverse has a green 3 cent tax stamp and a photographer’s imprint of EDWARD P. HIPPLE…PHILADELPHIA. Reverse also has a period ink inscription that reads “CO.H, 6TH REGT. M.V.M.”

Albert Ames Chittenden was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts on October 1, 1842. When he first enlisted he was a 20 year old clerk living in Boston. On September 15, 1862 he enlisted as a Corporal in Company A, 45th Massachusetts Infantry for nine months. During this service Chittenden was with his regiment in North Carolina where they were engaged in battles at Kinston, Whitehall and Core Creek. Chittenden was mustered out on July 7, 1863.

A year later on July 16, 1864 he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in Company H, 6th Massachusetts Infantry. While with the 6th he served in the defenses of Washington and guarding Confederate prisoners at Fort Delaware. He was mustered out on October 27, 1864.

After the war he lived in Dorchester and was a member of the Benjamin Stone Jr. Post #68 of the GAR. He died on October 6, 1932 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett, Massachusetts.
