Item Code: 697-771

Horizontal CDV showing a small boat with a single mast on shore near Fort Pickering which was located on Winter Island near Salem, Massachusetts. The view shows four soldiers in the boat, one in the bow, one in the stern and two amid-ships. One of the two at center stands by the mast and is holding a line. There is a rocky bluff in the background with another smaller boat on the beach. The contrast is good and the image is clear.

The bottom edge of the image mount is marked with an arrow and an “X.” The arrow is below the soldier in the bow and the “X” is below the soldier holding the line. The reverse of a the photo has pencil inscription identifying the man marked with the arrow as “BYRON TILTON” and the soldier marked by the “X” as “CHARLES E. ARMITAGE.” A modern note gives their regiment as “3rd UNATTACHED MASS. VOL. INFANTRY, FORT PICKERING, SALEM.”

W. Byron Tilton was born around 1845. He was employed as a Clerk when he enlisted at Boston in the 3rd Company, Unassigned Massachusetts Infantry on May 3, 1864 for three months. At some point he Tilton was promoted to Corporal before his muster out on August 5, 1864.
