CDV is a three-quarter seated view of Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Stedman who first served as a Private and Sergeant in the 6th Massachusetts and then a Lieutenant Colonel in the 42nd Massachusetts.

Stedman is shown wearing a dark double-breasted frock coat with Lieutenant Colonel shoulder straps and light trousers with knee high boots. At his waist is his sword belt with rectangular eagle plate and cradled in his lap is a Model 1850 Field & Staff officer’s sword. Image is clear with good contrast. Bottom edge of paper looks to have a blemish that may have been on the original negative.

Reverse has collector information and photographers imprint for J. W. BLACK…BOSTON. Image ID is confirmed by on line database.

Joseph Stedman was a 26 year old Civil Engineer living in Medfield when he enlisted as a Private in Company B, 6th Massachusetts Infantry for three months on April 15, 1861. Fortunately for Stedman he was not in the part of the regiment that was attacked by crowds as it passed through Baltimore on April 19th. His three month service was spent in Baltimore keeping the peace. He was promoted to Sergeant on May 2nd and was mustered out on August 2, 1861.

Stedman’s next service was as Lieutenant Colonel of the 42nd Massachusetts Infantry. He was commissioned on September 13, 1862. Stedman was sent with his regiment to Louisiana where they were attached to the 19th Corps. They spent their term on detached service doing guard duty. Parts of the regiment were captured but Stedman managed to avoid capture. He was mustered out on August 20, 1863.

The 42nd was called out again for 100 days on July 22, 1864. Stedman was again Lieutenant Colonel. The regiment moved to Maryland under command of Lieutenant Colonel Stedman until Colonel Burrell, who had been captured during the regiments 9 months service, could return. During their 100 days the regiment did guard and picket duty.
