Backmark: “S.B. Brown/ Photographer/ 101 Westminster St. / Providence, R.I.” Signed in ink, lower margin, “John C. Budlong, M.D.” Standard brown lined front margins.  Hatless, bearded Subject stands posed against plain studio backdrop, clad in officer’s frock coat with shoulder straps, sash, sword belt & sword. Image is medium sharp and clear, exhibiting slight wear and soiling. Else VG.

John Clarke Budlong enlisted as assistant surgeon and was commissioned into Field and Staff  3rd Rhode Island Cavalry on 11/29/1863. He was promoted to surgeon on 11/16/1863 and was mustered at New Orleans, LA. 11/29/1865. He died at Providence, RI, 7/24/ 1907. His unit was posted to Louisiana and saw action during the 1864 Red River Campaign.
