CDV shows Orange S. Whitmore posed leaning on a chair. He wears a dark frock coat with dark velvet collar and lapels. The coat is open to reveal a dark military vest open at the middle. He also wears light trousers that may be military. This image was taken just after Whitmore’s discharge from the Army and he looks tired and worn out.

Reverse has a wonderful period ink inscription that reads “YOUR AFF. BRO. O. SCOTT WHITMORE, CHICAGO, ILL. MAR. 1863.” There is no photographer’s back mark.

The image is clear with very good contrast. Paper has light surface dirt.

Orange Scott Whitmore was born October 26, 1839 in Ashburnham, Massachusetts. He was living in Bakersfield, Vermont when he enlisted as a Sergeant in Company A, 9th Vermont Infantry on June 9, 1862.

The regiment went to Harper’s Ferry where it was captured by Stonewall Jackson during the Antietam Campaign. The regiment was paroled and sent to Chicago. There on March 15, 1863 Sergeant Whitmore was discharged due to disability.

His movements and history after the war are not known but it is known that he died in Los Angeles, California on May 6, 1908 and was buried in Mountain View Cemetery and Mausoleum in Altadena, California.
