Knees up view CDV of Samuel H. Kennedy who served in Company H, 3rd Pennsylvania Cavalry.

Kennedy is shown standing between two trees that look to be props that the photographer moved into a tent from outside. The subject is posed cradling his cavalry saber in his left arm. He wears a forage cap with a Cavalry shell jacket and dark trousers. He wears gauntlets on his hands and at his waist is his belt with rectangular belt plate, cap box and pistol with holster. The saber being held is in the scabbard with a sword knot attached to the hilt.

The reverse has a nice period ink inscription that reads “SAM. H. KENNEDY CO. H. 3D PA. CAVALRY NEWVILLE(?) PA.” There is a pencil mark over part of the town name so it is difficult to read.

Image has browned some with age but it is clear with a contrast that is on the light side. The top corners are clipped and unfortunately the bottom of the mount and image is trimmed.

Samuel H. Kennedy was from Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He enlisted as a Corporal in Company H, 3rd Pennsylvania Cavalry on August 17, 1861. He was discharged for disability on August 13, 1862. During the year that Kennedy was with the regiment they were involved in several skirmishes and on the Peninsula at Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, Savage’s Station and Malvern Hill.
