Image shows Commissary Sergeant Charles D. Young of the 69th New York National Guard Artillery which eventually became the 182nd New York Infantry and part of Corcoran’s Legion.

Young is posed by a chair on which his left hand rests. He wears a dark frock coat with dark Commissary Sergeant chevrons and light trousers. The bottom of the mount is nicely signed in period ink “YOUR’S TRULY CHARLES D. YOUNG.

The reverse has a photographer’s imprint for P. H. Rupp…N.Y. Reverse also has another wonderful period ink inscription that reads “CHAS. D. YOUNG COMMISSARY SERGEANT 69TH REGIMENT N. Y. (??) A.”

Charles D. Young was 19 years old when he enlisted as Commissary Sergeant in the 182nd New York on September 19, 1862. Muster roll abstracts found on-line show him to be present throughout his service with a promotion to Quartermaster Sergeant coming on September 2, 1864. Young was mustered out at Washington, D.C. on July 15, 1865.

During Young’s service the 182nd New York was mustered into service in November of 1862 and served in the 7th and 22nd Corps before being assigned to the 2nd Corps of the Army of the Potomac in May of 1864. The regiment saw action at Deserted House near Suffolk, Va. in January of 1863 and at Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Weldon Railroad, Deep Bottom, Ream’s Station, Boydton Plank Road and Hatcher’s Run. During its service the regiment lost 126 men killed, died of wounds and disease.
