John McArthur was born November 17, 1826 in Erskine, Scotland. He came to the United States at the age of 23 and settled in Chicago, Illinois.

He was active in the pre-war militia rising to the rank of Captain. When the Civil War began he was commissioned Colonel of the 12th Illinois Infantry. Within a year Colonel McArthur was commanding the 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, District of Cairo under U. S. Grant. He served at Fort’s Henry and Donelson and was promoted to Brigadier General in March of 1862. He took over the Division of General W. H. L. Wallace when the latter was killed at Shiloh and led a Division in the Army of the Tennessee at Iuka and Corinth. McArthur led a Division of the 17th Corps at Vicksburg and after its fall he was commander of the city until August of 1864. He next commanded troops who guarded Sherman’s line of communications from Atlanta to Chattanooga. In November he led a Division of the 16th Corps to Nashville and took part in the battle of Nashville the following month. For his services he was promoted to Major General by brevet. He then served under Canby and the end of the war found him stationed in Selma, Alabama.

His post-war career did not go well. He failed to restart his ironworks business and had the unfortunate distinction to be the commissioner of public works during the great Chicago Fire in 1871 and he was also involved in a bank failure. He died in Chicago on May 15, 1906 and is buried in Rosehill Cemetery there.
