This is a very nice, bright and clean image of James F. Hall of the 1st New York Engineers.

Hall is shown leaning against a column on which his forage cap rests. An interesting thing to note is the front of the cap has an Engineer’s insignia inside of an oak wreath. Hall himself is shown wearing a double-breasted dark frock coat with Major’s shoulder straps and matching dark trousers with a thin light colored leg stripe. He holds a pair of gauntlets in his left hand and at his waist is a sword belt with rectangular plate and a Model 1850 Foot Officer’s sword with a sword knot.

As mentioned above the image is clean and bright with great contrast. The reverse has a collector’s ID in pencil at top and a photographer’s imprint for J. GURNEY & SON…NEW YORK. The ID is confirmed by an on-line image.

James Frederick Hall was born on January 31, 1823 in New York City. At the age of 38 he was commissioned Major of the 1st New York Engineers at Albany on July 27, 1861 and was mustered in the following October 10th. Hall rose to Lieutenant Colonel on February 14, 1862 and Colonel on February 16, 1865. He received a brevet promotion to Brigadier General on February 24, 1865.

While Hall was with the 1st New York it saw action in 30 battles and skirmishes in South Carolina, Florida and Virginia. They served on James, Folly and Morris Islands and took part in the siege of Fort Wagner and Battery Gregg. They were also engaged at Olustee, Ream’s Station, Petersburg, Dutch Gap, Fort Harrison and Fort Brady. During its service the regiment lost 148 officers and men killed, died of wounds or died of disease.

Hall was mustered out at Richmond on June 30, 1865 and died at Tarrytown, New York on January 9, 1884 and was laid to rest in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Sleepy Hollow, New York.
