This CDV features the Democratic Candidates in the 1868 Presidential election. The image is a composite of Horatio Seymour on the left and Francis Preston Blair Jr. on the right. The pair was defeated by U.S. Grant and Schuyler Colfax by a margin of 214 Electoral Votes to 80, although the popular vote was closer. One of the more interesting things about this election is that Virginia, Mississippi and Texas still had not been readmitted to the Union so the people in those states could not vote.
Seymour was a two time Governor of New York who was perceived by many as a “Copperhead” during the Civil War even though some of his actions, such as opposing the Lincoln Administration and denying the vote to soldiers, were done for what Seymour felt were Constitutional reasons. Blair, who was from Kentucky, was elected to Congress as a Democrat from Missouri. During the Civil War he rose to the rank of Major General in the Union Army and eventually commanded the 17th Corps.
Image is clear with good contrast though the mount has yellowed some. “SEYMOUR AND BLAIR” is printed across the bottom of the mount. Reverse is blank.
