CDV is a waist-up view of Union officer Richard Lewis Guion. He is wearing a dark colored coat with shoulder boards.

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint which reads, “H.A. BALCH’S STAR PHOTOGRAPH GALLERY, NOS. 219 AND 221 MAIN STREET, MEMPHIS, TENN.”. Reverse also has a handwritten inscription in period ink which reads, “R.L. GUION LT. CO. E. 161ST N.Y.V.”.

Image is clear and the contrast is good. Surface has some light dirt from age. Image has yellowed with time.

Richard Lewis Guion enlisted at 21 years old on August 21, 1862 at Elmira, N.Y. as a Corporal. On September 17, 1862 he mustered into Co. “C”, 161st New York Infantry. He was promoted to Field & Staff and promoted to Sergeant-Major on April 15, 1863. He was then transferred into Co. “E” on September 23, 1863 where he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. He was later promoted to 1at Lieutenant on March 3, 1864. He was listed as wounded on April 8, 1864 and was discharged for disability on June 12, 1865. Guion died in 1922 in New Rochelle, New York.
