CDV is a chest-up view of Samuel Paine of the 2^nd Maine Artillery. He is wearing a dark colored coat with stand-up collar and shoulder boards. Bottom of mount is labeled with a handwritten inscription in period ink, “SAMUEL PAINE 1^ST LIEUT. 2^ND BATTERY M.V.A.”.

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint which reads, “B.F. SMITH & SON. PHOTOGRAPHERS, 91 MIDDLE STREET, PORTLAND”.

Image is clear and the contrast is good. Surface has some light dirt from age. Image has yellowed with time.

Samuel Paine, of Portland, Maine, enlisted on January 1, 1862 at the age of 27 as a 2^nd Lieutenant, and was commissioned into 2^nd Maine Light Artillery. He was eventually promoted to 1^st Lieutenant in 1862. He resigned on March 7, 1863.
