CDV is a chest-up view of Samuel Paine of the 2nd Maine Artillery. He is wearing a dark colored coat with stand-up collar and shoulder boards. Bottom of mount is labeled with a handwritten inscription in period ink, “SAMUEL PAINE 1ST LIEUT. 2ND BATTERY M.V.A.”.

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint which reads, “B.F. SMITH & SON. PHOTOGRAPHERS, 91 MIDDLE STREET, PORTLAND”.

Image is clear and the contrast is good. Surface has some light dirt from age. Image has yellowed with time.

Samuel Paine, of Portland, Maine, enlisted on January 1, 1862 at the age of 27 as a 2nd Lieutenant, and was commissioned into 2nd Maine Light Artillery. He was eventually promoted to 1st Lieutenant in 1862. He resigned on March 7, 1863.
