Nice full standing view of Lt Col. Elisha S. Kellogg who was killed in action while leading the 2nd Connecticut Heavy Artillery at Cold Harbor. Lt-Col. Kellogg is shown wearing a double breasted frock coat, forage cap, gauntlets and holds his sword out in front of him. No backmark. Only collectors information in pencil on back. Comes with copy of the same photo with ID and some internet research describing his gallant death.
Elisha Kellogg resided in Derby, Conn. when he was commissioned a Captain in Co. B 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery in November of 1861. The following March he was promoted to Major and was discharged in September of 1862 to accept the position of Lt. Col. Of the 19th Connecticut Infantry. The 19th was soon changed to the 2nd Connecticut Heavy Artillery. They were assigned to Grant's Army in 1864 . On June 1, 1864 Kellogg was killed while leading the regiment in an attack on the Confederate earthworks. He was shot twice in the head and fell on the Confederate works. His body was later recovered and shipped back to Connecticut for burial. [AD]
