Photo is a waist- up view of Captain Barksdale in uniform. The strikingly handsome Captain is wearing a double breasted coat. The buttons and collar rank insignia have been highlighted in gold by the photographer. Image is very clear with excellent contrast. There is a very minor, shallow horizontal crease at the top of the image, across the subject's forehead.

Oval wooden frame is stained dark brown with inner rim painted gold. Double matted with an embossed gold mat surrounding photo. Frame measures 12 ¾” x 14 ¾”. Photo measures 4 ½” x 5 7/8”.

George Annesley Barksdale was born on January 3, 1835. He is listed as a quartermaster, and is on the rolls for 1861. He also had service in Field & Staff for the 16th Virginia Infantry, date unknown. After the war, he was the recording secretary of the Virginia Historical Society. Barksdale died on November 19, 1910 and is buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia.

The 16th Virginia Infantry was organized on May 17, 1861 and mustered out on April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Court House.

Records accompany this purchase, including soldier and unit history, census records from 1850 and 1880, a copy of Barksdale’s original appointment on July 19, 1861 as Asst. Quartermaster of the 16th Virginia, stating that he was to report to Colonel Raleigh Colston and signed by LeRoy Pope Walker as Secretary of War of the C.S.A., and photocopied ambrotypes of Barksdale and his wife that were previously sold at auction and grave record.  [sm]
