CDV ATTRIBUTED TO YOUNG PENNSYLVANIA PRIVATE KILLED AT CHANCELLORSVILLE

$395.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: P13876

Image is three-quarter standing view of a young Union soldier wearing a forage cap, dark frock coat with brass shoulder scales and light trousers. He also wears his waist belt with a Model 1839 oval “US” belt plate. Attached to the belt is a heavy sword bayonet. Image is very clean and clear with good contrast. The mount has an orange border.

Reverse is blank except for a modern pencil ID that reads Israel Barnes.

Israel Barnes was an 18 year old living in Philadelphia when he enlisted as a Private in Company G, 91st Pennsylvania infantry on September 14, 1861. He served with the regiment at Fredericksburg and the famous “Mud March” before being killed at Chancellorsville on May 5, 1863.

The ID on the reverse could have come from an album page when the photo was removed. The age of Private Barnes as given in his record seems to match the subject in the photograph and a wonderful website for the 91st Pennsylvania has this image posted on Private Barnes entry. This can be viewed at:
