This fine, identified Civil War image is that of Captain William B. Bacon, an infantry officer from Worcester, Massachusetts. Bacon was a nineteen-year-old “gentleman” when he was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in Company “K”, 13th Mass Infantry on July 16, 1861. He served with the unit until discharge for promotion and received his Captain’s commission of “E” Company, 34th Mass Infantry Regiment on August 15, 1862. Bacon was later killed in action on May 15, 1864 at New Market, Virginia.

The officer presents a ¾ length seated view and gazes indirectly at the camera with a determined expression on his face. Image is sharp and clear. He wears a dark officer’s frock coat that features the shoulder straps of a Captain. In the image, Barney rests his left hand on a small side table in the photographer’s studio while his right arm is on his right knee. Captain Bacon also wears light colored trousers. CDV boasts a BM of “CLAFLIN / 229 Main Street, / WORCESTER”. The unclipped CDV is in very fine, clean original condition. Comes with a cursory history from HDS. A wonderful CDV of an identified Massachusetts infantry officer who was killed in action during in the American Civil War.  [ra]
