This fine, identified Civil War image is that of Captain William B. Bacon, an infantry officer from Worcester, Massachusetts. Bacon was a nineteen-year-old “gentleman” when he was commissioned as a 1^st Lieutenant in Company “K”, 13^th Mass Infantry on July 16, 1861. He served with the unit until discharge for promotion and received his Captain’s commission of “E” Company, 34^th Mass Infantry Regiment on August 15, 1862. Bacon was later killed in action on May 15, 1864 at New Market, Virginia.

The officer presents a ¾ length seated view and gazes indirectly at the camera with a determined expression on his face. Image is sharp and clear. He wears a dark officer’s frock coat that features the shoulder straps of a Captain. In the image, Barney rests his left hand on a small side table in the photographer’s studio while his right arm is on his right knee. Captain Bacon also wears light colored trousers. CDV boasts a BM of “CLAFLIN / 229 Main Street, / WORCESTER”. The unclipped CDV is in very fine, clean original condition. Comes with a cursory history from HDS.
