This CDV shows Colonel Thomas G. Stevenson in the uniform of a Brigadier General and John F. Anderson as a Major. Stevenson is seated while Anderson sits on the edge of a balustrade.

Stevenson sits with a rather thoughtful look on his face with one arm curled around the back of the chair and resting on his hip while the other is in his lap. He wears a dark double-breasted frock coat with black velvet collar and cuffs with Brigadier Generals should straps and dark trousers. Major Anderson wears a similar uniform but minus the velvet collar and cuffs. He also wears Major’s shoulder straps. Both men are posed in front of a painted backdrop of a pastoral scene.

The image is clear with good contrast. The reverse has a photographer’s back mark for BLACK & CASE…BOSTON & NEWPORT, R.I. Both IDs are confirmed by on-line images.

Thomas Greely Stevenson was born on February 3, 1836 in Boston, Massachusetts. Stevenson rose through the ranks of the 4th Battalion of the Massachusetts Militia and by the commencement of the Civil War he was the battalion’s commander and drill master. In the fall of 1861 he recruited the 24th Massachusetts Infantry and was appointed its Colonel. Stevenson and his regiment served in Burnside’s North Carolina Expedition and participated in the capture of Roanoke Island and New Berne. Stevenson eventually commanded a brigade in the movements against Goldsboro and Kinston and in December of 1862 he was appointed a Brigadier General. He saw much action during the siege of Charleston assisting in the reduction of Morris Island and the assault on Fort Wagner. He returned north to recover his health and was then assigned to command the 1st Division of the 9th Corps and was killed at Spotsylvania on May 10, 1864. He is buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

John Francis Anderson was born on December 4, 1832 in Wiscasset, Maine, the son of former Maine Governor Hugh J. Anderson. John enlisted at the start of the Civil War as a Private in the 4th Massachusetts Militia Battalion. When that unit was mustered out, he was commissioned as 1st Lieutenant and regimental Adjutant of the 24th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He subsequently joined the staff of Major General John G. Foster, serving as an Aide-de-Camp and rising to the rank of Major. He was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war.” He died in Portland, Maine on April 19, 1902 and is buried in Grove Cemetery in Belfast, Maine.  [ad]
