L, 17TH PENNA. CAVALRY.”

Image is clear with good contrast. Mount has a bit of light surface dirt.

Reverse of the image is blank.

Samuel Albert McDonald was born in Scotland on November 4, 1843. Exactly when he came to the United States is not known. However, it is known that he enlisted as a Private in Company L, 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry on September 25, 1862 and served with them through the end of the war being mustered out on June 16, 1865. During McDonalds service the regiment took part in 79 battles and engagements in the Eastern Theater of war losing 232 officers men killed, died of wounds and disease. There is also some evidence that McDonald served as an aide to General Grant.

After the war McDonald married and raised a large family. He was also active in the GAR. He died on May 14, 1909 and is buried in Riverview Cemetery in Millerstown, Pa.  [ad]
