IMAGE OF GENERAL GRANT ON LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN - EARLY COPY PRINT FROM THE ORIGINAL NEGATIVE

$100.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 668-94

This image is a well-known one of General Grant and his staff on Lookout Mountain at Chattanooga, Tennessee. The print was made in the early 1900’s from an original Brady negative so the detail and clarity are very good.

Image meas. approx. 5.00 x 7.00 inches and has excellent clarity and contrast. The photograph gives a good example of the cliff-like, steep terrain overcome by the Union assault on November 24, 1863.

The reverse of the image has a stamped title on the back of “GEN. GRANT ON LOOKOUT MT. 1863.” There are also three handwritten inscriptions on the reverse. The first one is in ink and reads “LEFT TO RIGHT GEN. GRANT, GEN. RAWLINS, GEN. WEBSTER, COL. LOGAN, COL. KILLYER.” Looking at the image under magnification it can be discerned that Gen. Grant is indeed standing at left. However, with him are two 1st Lieutenants and two men in civilian clothes as well as a 1st Sergeant seated in the background. These are certainly not the Generals mentioned in the caption.

The next two inscriptions are in pencil and read “BATTLE OF CHATTANOOGA – NOV. 25, 1863 ‘HOOKER’S TROOPS HAD INDEED TAKEN LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN.’” and “NOV. 24, 1863 HOOKER SEIZED THE TOP OF LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN IN THE ‘BATTLE ABOVE THE CLOUDS.’ MUZZY’S AMERICAN HISTORY. HOLD—DO NOT SELL.”

David Saville Muzzey lived from 1870 to 1965. He graduated from Harvard in 1893 and was known as an American historian. His text books appeared in the early 1900’s and educated millions of American children.
