Augustus Chouteau Paul served with the 23rd Kentucky Volunteers and was later as A.A.G/ 2nd Army Corps. Captured in during the 1864 Overland Campaign 1864, he was exchanged in May 1865, and later received brevets to major and lieutenant colonel. Joining the cavalry as a lieutenant in 1869, he served under Crook in the 3rd Cavalry during the Great Sioux Uprising. In 1881 he was convicted at a general court martial of being intoxicated and unfit for service and dismissed from the army. His political connections enabled him to have a private bill passed through congress restoring him to the retired list and expunging his dismissal. In all, Captain Paul is an interesting character who invites further research.   [jp]
