Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1000-768

Waist-up view wearing a frock coat open in front and secured by a tab at the top. He also wears a light-colored vest. All buttons are staff style but not in focus enough to see if they are state buttons or eagle staff buttons. The identification is in the back of the original case in period pencil, “Henry O. Hobson Co. E 41st Va Infty”.

Private Hobson enlisted March 1, 1862 at Petersburg, VA as a private. He was born there on Sept. 20, 1844 and died there April 3, 1880. He is buried in Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg. Pvt. Hobson was wounded in the shoulder on July 1, 1862 at Malvern Hill, VA. He was hospitalized the next day and transferred on September 19, 1862 to Petersburg, VA Hospital. On November 14 he was transferred to Poplar Lawn Hospital, also in Petersburg. In April of 1863 he is detailed as a hospital orderly – light duty. In November 1863 he is detailed with Government Telegraph Office and the 44th Battalion. He returned to his regiment on December 12, 1864 and was captured at Burkeville, VA on April 7, 1865, where he signed the Oath of Allegiance on April 21, 1865.

Copies of the National Archives file accompany the image.

The image has some minor spotting and some of the applied lacquer on the reverse has flecked away. A piece of new black felt behind the image in the case easily remedies this issue.

Nice identified image.   [ss]
