This is one of two daguerreotypes from the Wakeman family we are proud to offer. This one is nicely identified in ink on a paper label pasted to the facing pad, reading: “My grandfather / Thaddeus Burr Wakeman.” Wakeman is shown in a mid-chest up portrait by Meade & Brother, so marked on the mat, with tall collar, cravat, vest and coat, with his hair carefully slicked back, a wearing a pair of glasses that gives him an appropriately studious look. The photographer has delicately tinted his cheeks.

Thaddeus Burr Wakeman (1834-1913) was one of four children of Jonathan and Clara Wakeman of Greefield Hills, CT. He graduated Princeton in 1854 and, like his brother Abram, became a lawyer, the two reportedly being partners for a time. He was best known, however, as a political philosopher, liberal advocate, activist in “free thought” movements. He was a member of several liberal and scientific societies of NY City, President of the Liberal League and Liberal Club, Editor of the magazine “Man” and Associate Editor of the “Freethinkers’ Magazine.” For a time he was President of “Liberal University” in Silverton, Oregon. He published numerous pamphlets, “op-ed” pieces, letters and speeches in liberal causes. He married Emily Francis Ludlum in 1859, founder of the Society for Political Study and a prominent advocate for women’s voting rights.

The image is well preserved in its original case, with oval mat, frame, and glass, and original seals intact, though the cover and body of the case are separated and the clasp is broken. There are a few small spots on the plate and some tiny bits of verdigris on the brass mat. Otherwise this is a very crisp image.  [sr]
