Three-quarter standing view of Lieutenant Stebbins posed with his arms folded across his chest. He is shown wearing a dark frock coat with nine button front and three button cuffs. On his shoulders are a pair of 2nd Lieutenant shoulder straps. He also wears a sword belt with shoulder support strap. Image is clear and the contrast is good. Paper and mount have only light surface dirt from age. Reverse has photographers imprint for SILSBEE, CASE & CO… BOSTON. Reverse also has collector information in pencil. Image is ID by identical view in the collection of the US Army Military History Institute, Carlisle, Pa. With the photo comes a data sheet of Stebbins service which also has a bust view of him attached.
Asa Harvey Stebbins was born in Deerfield, Massachusetts on April 5, 1839. The 23 year old was living in Boston when the Civil War broke out. He first enlisted as a Corporal in Company A, 4th Battalion Massachusetts Infantry on May 27, 1862 but was mustered out 4 days later. Then, on August 8, 1862 he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant of Company D, 44th Massachusetts Infantry and was mustered in on September 12, 1862 to serve nine months. On November 11, 1862 Lieutenant Stebbins was wounded at Rawle’s Mill near Williamston, North Carolina. The extent of his wound is not known at present. He was mustered out with his Company at Readville, Massachusetts on June 18, 1863. After his service Stebbins returned to Deerfield, married and had two children. In 1878 Stebbins moved out to famous Tombstone, Arizona where he ran the True Blue mine and was active in the GAR. Not long after moving to Arizona Stebbins’ wife died. He sent his two children back East while he stayed in Tombstone being active in mining, the GAR and Republican politics. He died in Tombstone on July 12, 1889 and is buried there in Old Tombstone Cemetery. Not long after his death the GAR Post in Bisbee, Arizona was named for him.
