INTERESTING CDV OF 91ST PENNSYLVANIA DRUMMER WITH POSSIBLE ID

This is one of the most interesting and unusual images this writer has come across for many years. This CDV is a full standing view of a young drummer posed by a flag draped balustrade on which his very interesting forage cap rests.

The subject wears a dark shell jacket, dark shirt and light trousers. His shirt has a white collar with a white bow tie. Slung over his shoulder is his plain snare drum with white sling and leather yoke and clip. In his hands he holds drumsticks as if ready to play.

Visible just behind the subject is his forage cap which he has turned into a billboard with lettering along the top edge of the disc that reads “…DRUMMER OF…” Then, at center is

with a 5th Corps badge at the very bottom. In front of the word “DRUMMER” there are two letters that are hard to discern and may be the subject’s initials.

The image is clear with good contrast. There is some light surface dirt throughout and light foxing above the subject’s head. Reverse has photographers imprint for THE LARKIN GALLERY… PHILADELPHIA.

A check of the records discloses that Company I, 91st Pennsylvania Infantry had only one musician. Some Companies of the regiment had two or three but Company I had only one throughout its service. No others were transferred into the Company according to two different rosters consulted. With that in mind it is believed that the drummer pictured is Musician Samuel Dougherty.

Samuel Dougherty enlisted as a Musician on September 19, 1861 and was with the regiment throughout its service until the very end. When the war ended he was absent on furlough and was mustered out on July 10, 1865. The 91st was part of the 5th Corps, Army of the Potomac, from September 1862 to the end of the war.
