Photograph is a three-quarter standing view of a bearded Union soldier wearing his forage cap and a dark greatcoat. The bottom of the mount has a period pencil inscription that reads “HORACE PAGE.” Image is clear with light surface dirt. Contrast is also good.
Reverse has large photographers imprint for GRIFFIN & COPEN… BOSTON. There is also a period pencil inscription that reads “PRESENTED TO CASSIE E. PAGE.” Very bottom of reverse has collectors information in pencil.
Horace S. Page was a 21 year old farmer living in South Danvers when he enlisted as a Corporal in Company C, 5th Massachusetts on August 15, 1862. With his regiment Page was sent to North Carolina. While there the regiment was engaged at Kinston, Whitehall and Goldsboro. Page was mustered out on July 2, 1863.

This sword was probably sold by Schuyler, Hartley & Graham of New York. The pattern is pictured in their 1864 catalogue in figures 13 and 16. Rather than have a standard blade, the lightly curved 32 inch blade has "B.K." (Battery K) on the left… (870-447). Learn More »
