Full standing view of Joseph T. Jones of Company H. Jones is shown in the classic Napoleonic pose with one hand thrust in his coat. He wears a kepi with a small embroidered Infantry insignia on the front, dark frock coat with Lieutenants shoulder straps, matching dark trousers, sash, waist belt and import Model 1850 Foot Officer’s sword.  Image is clear with good contrast. Mount has light surface dirt and is inscribed at bottom in period ink “AT PRESENT.”

Reverse has photographers imprint of EDWARD P. HIPPLE… PHILADELPHIA. Jones inscribed the back of the image “WITH MY COMPLIMENTS” above the photographers imprint while below it is “PRESENT BY LIEUT. J. T. JONES TO H. T. ANGEL CO.L, 155TH REGT. P. VOLS.” Despite the regimental designation of 155th PA there was a Harry T. Angel in Jones’s Company H. He was wounded at Petersburg on November 24, 1864 and died of his wounds December 15th of that year. The record does not show Angel in the 155th but who knows for sure? The records are often incomplete. Either way, there is no doubt as to who the subject of the image is.

Joseph T. Jones enlisted as a 1st Sergeant on September 10, 1861. He was with his Company throughout its service in the 5th Corps of the Army of the Potomac and attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He was wounded in both feet at Cold Harbor on June 2, 1864 and was discharged on October 1st of that year. He was a well-liked officer and a favorite among the men of his Company.

After the war Jones went into the oil business and struck it rich. He split his time living in Erie County, New York and Golfport, Mississippi where he helped construct a harbor. He died on December 6, 1916 leaving an estate of fifteen million dollars. A statue of him was erected in Golfport which still stands to this day.
