Image is a bust view of a young man in a dark coat with a turned down collar and cloth covered buttons. Very nice, bold ink inscription at bottom reads “THOS. J. KURTZ 91ST REGT. P. V.V.” Image is clear but contrast is a little light. Mount and paper are very clean.
Reverse has photographers imprint for F. GUTEKUNST… PHILADELPHIA. Reverse also has bold ink inscription “COMPLIMENTS OF THOS. J. KURTZ, CO. D, 91ST REGT. P.V.V., COL. E. M. GREGORY.”
Thomas J. Kurtz was 18 years old when he enlisted as a Private in Company D, 91st Pennsylvania on February 16, 1864. He was assigned to duty as a clerk to the Regimental Quartermaster and then sent to Philadelphia on Recruiting Service. He returned to the regiment in the spring and was assigned as clerk for Colonel Gregory. He was mustered out on July 10, 1865.
