Waist up view of James Troy of Methuen, Massachusetts. He is shown wearing a dark frock coat with Captains shoulder straps and sporting a rather large mustache. The mount is nicely signed in period ink on the bottom “JAS. A. TROY, CAPT. CO. A, 26TH MA.” Lower corners are clipped affecting the end of the inscription. Image is clean and clear with great contrast.

Reverse has photographers imprint of WILSON’S…SAVANNAH, GA. Reverse is also signed in ink “CAPT. JAS. A. TROY. CO.A, 26th MASS. V. V. METHUEN, MASS.”

James A. Troy enlisted as a Corporal in Company F, 6th Massachusetts Infantry on April 22, 1861. While with this famous regiment Troy did Guard Duty in Baltimore. He was mustered out on August 2, 1861.

Troy next enlisted in Company F, 26th Massachusetts Infantry on October 18, 1861 and was promoted to 1st Sergeant the following November 1st. On February 16, 1862 he was transferred from Company F to Company A. Troy served with his regiment in New Orleans. He was promoted 2nd Lieutenant on December 16, 1862.

In January of 1864 the regiment moved to Maryland and went with the 19th Corps into the Shenandoah Valley. Here it saw action at Winchester and Cedar Creek. On October 10, 1864 Troy was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and on the 15th of the following month he was promoted to Captain. The regiment stayed in the Shenandoah until May of 1865 when they were sent to Washington, D.C. and from there to Savannah, Georgia. Captain Troy was mustered out at Savannah, Georgia on August 26, 1865.
