Item Code: 801-02

Originally with the personal effects of Major Andrew B. Brunner. Brunner enlisted in the 2d Maryland as a captain on 6/18/61, was promoted to major 9/22/62 and resigned 2/16/63 due to injuries received in service. The flag was purchased from a direct lineal descendant of Brunner.

The flag is double sided blue silk, 18 7/8" X 20 3/4", including what appears to be a faded yellow 1 1/8" silk fringe around three sides. The hoist incorporates three 11" long, 1 1/16" wide darker blue silk ties. In the center of the flag is an exquisitely embroidered, 8" high, white silk numeral 2. The flag exhibits some fading from honest use, else in really excellent sound condition. There are a few scattered cracks in the silk, most of which are in the top 4", along with one small, 1 1/2" X 1/4" hole at upper left. The flag has been professionally and archivally mounted and framed. The frame measures 27 ¼” x 23 ¼”.

The 2d Maryland Vol. Inf. entered service 06/01/61 and served through the war, mustering out 7/17/65. The regiment lost 89 men killed and mortally wounded. During Brunner's tenure with the regiment they were engaged at 2d Bull Run, Chantilly, South Mountain, Antietam, and Fredericksburg. A great Civil War flag as used by a gallant and important regiment.
