This is a beautiful matched pair of Civil War officers’ calf-skin gauntlets. They were worn by Andrew Y. McDonald, 1st lieutenant of Co. E, 21st Iowa Infantry. McDonald was wounded several times in battle.

The gauntlets are in exceptional condition. The calf-skin is soft and supple and retains an appealing golden tone. They exhibit only minor wear with some dirty staining on the cuffs and palms from use. Moderate wear and loss to the thin edge band sewn around the cuff.

These are identified by the pen & Ink name written in each glove. “A. Y. McDonald” is clearly visible on the inside of each cuff. The name is written in a pleasing script. Also found in each glove is the size number and an inventory number from a previous collection.

Andrew Y. McDonald served in Co. I, 1st Iowa Infantry for three months. He was seriously wounded in the left knee by a musket ball during the Battle of Wilson’s Creek in 1861. He re-enlisted as a 2nd lieutenant in Co. E, 21st Iowa Infantry for three years’ service. He was seriously wounded again at the Battle of Black River Bridge in 1863 during the Vicksburg Campaign. This time he was shot in the right arm. The bullet was never removed.

Accompanying the gauntlets are McDonald’s complete military and pension records as compiled by Vonnie Zullo.   [jet]
