Pair of dress, worsted wool epaulettes for a militia officer in their japanned tin carrying case.
Epaulette upper-surfaces are plain white wool with a single thin blue cord border, alternating blue and white cord wrapped outer shell, with rows of white wool tassels. One epaulette still retains a brass button with the English script letters “CG”. Undersides are covered in white cotton with very thick shoulder cushions and brass fastener clasps. The same epaulette that retains the “CG” button also has old pen & ink writing on the cotton lining on the underside. It reads: “Wm. D. Morris / B.L.G. / July 1st 18__.” Faded ink and rust stains have rendered some of the identification hard to decipher.
The epaulettes exhibit very slight wear to the knap of the wool. The cord and tassels are very good. The cotton undersides show wear on the end edges where the iron frame has worn or rusted through. Overall epaulette condition is very good. Carrying case is in nice condition. Japanning on outer surface exhibits usual scratching. Inner case clean with only minor scratches. Complete with handle but side clasp fastener is broken. [jet]
