This red cord measures 15” long and was taken as a souvenir by a soldier from the 21st Massachusetts as he was on board the vessel. The Northerner was a steamer that the Union Army employed for use as a transport vessel during the Civil War. Note enclosed with this flag tassel reads, “This red cord was taken from the old steamer Northerner, which carried the 21st M.V.M. to Roanoke Island in Jan. or Feb 1862 by G.H. Hardy, Co. D. 21st Reg. M.V.M.”. Note is handwritten in pencil and measures 6” x 1 ¾”.
The soldier who acquired the cord was George H. Hardy, a resident of Harvard, MA. He was a farmer and enlisted at the age of 21 on 8/12/1861 as a Private and was mustered into Co. “D” 21st MA Infantry. He was listed as wounded on 2/28/1862 at Roanoke Island, NC. On 5/8/1863 he was promoted to Corporal. He reenlisted on 1/1/1864 then mustered out on 6/21/1865. [SM]
