IDENTIFIED PAIR OF RIFLEMAN’S EPAULETTES WITH POM-POM

$950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 864-04

Green wool Rifleman’s epaulettes with green tassels for an enlisted man. Both are in excellent condition.

The bodies are covered in green cloth with a double row of twisted green wool outlining each clamshell. Each have a Rifleman’s button on one end. Suspended from each clamshell are green wool tassels.

The underside of each is lined with a green polished cotton. Each has the brass wire attachment hook under the Rifleman’s button. One of the linings has a slight tear under the clamshell. Both also have green cloth loops attached.

With the epaulettes is a green pom-pom attached to a long brass wire for wear on a shako. Pom-Pom and wire are in excellent shape.

With the items is a paper label that looks old but is rather recent. It reads “REGULATION EPAULETTS AND POM-POM FOR THE REGT. OF MOUNTED RIFLEMAN 1851-1854 (WORN BY WESLEY WILSON GARNER FROM IOWA.)” The back of the label has a modern pencil inscription that reads “CO. D, 5TH ARKANSAS CAV. – LT. W.W. GARNER—P. J. ROLLOW COMPANY.”

Research does show a Wesley W. Garner from Iowa who was born in Pennsylvania in 1815 and was living in Iowa in 1860. He also appears as working for the pension office in Iowa but no military record exists for him.  Civil War records searched show a W. W. Garner who served as a Private in the Louisiana Scouts Cavalry (US) and there are four W. W. Garner listed in the Confederate service including the 5th Arkansas Cavalry officer mentioned above, however it is doubtful any of these are the man in question.

The identity was provided by the family and was verbal.

Still a rare set in excellent condition.    [ad]
