Maker mark: “Schively” [Phila.]. Brown, gilt-trimmed leather kit, containing 13 instruments, measuring 13” in length X 6” width, with red leatherette flaps and interior. Exterior leather & trim exhibits medium wear, as does the red felt interior. Medical instruments include various forceps, scissors, and a handful of small surgical knives bearing the “Schively” imprint. Also a small paper packet of needs, with ink inscription: “1 Sett surgical Needles & Needle for a handle.” Instruments display patches of light tarnish, otherwise VG.
Henry Schively was a prominent Philadelphia medical merchant, whose company dealt in surgical instrument kits from 1815 to 1873. This kit dates from the later Civil War era. Fine medical collectible.
