Presented here is an excellent reproduction ensemble of a 19th century doctor’s medical folding surgical field case replete with eleven of the thirteen assorted instruments housed in their leather case. Carried in a field surgeon’s saddlebags, this quality, black-grained leather-covered pasteboard case measures 9 ¾” long x 5” wide x 2” deep when closed.

The maker’s marking or stamp is evident in gold gilt lettering on the inside flap and reads “E. G. ARCHER & SON / KNOXVILLE, TENN.” Main body of the folding case opens fully to 13½” wide x 10” high and reveals thirteen leather loops.  Each loop is 1” high x ½” wide sewn to the middle of the body to hold the instruments. Inner case is lined with dark green felt material that is in beautiful condition with no wear or depressions. Inside of the case also features two leather flaps that close to protect the instruments when case is in transit.

The loops hold the eleven surgical instruments such as two wood handled tenaculums, a single, wood handled surgical scalpel, two amputating blades, one blade handle, two bullet forceps, a director, dissection forceps, bone forceps, and a surgical silk and suture set. Two instruments appear to be missing. All instruments are maker marked and in minty condition. Black leather folding case is also mint with no scuffs, cracks, blemishes or wear. Case closure is provided for by a brass tipped leather tab and loop on the outer flap.

This excellent reproduction piece of medical memorabilia of the nineteenth century makes a superb addition to any hospital or doctor’s display.
