Set of hanging gold balance scales in pressed paper case. Case is embossed on the top with a decorative border on the edges and a spread-winged eagle in the center. Underside of case is stamped with the maker’s imprint, much of which has worn off. The words that are legible read, “BARTLETT, ? & COMPANY, RICHMOND, VIRGINIA”. Edges of case are distressed and some of the paper is peeling. Original hook and knob are present. Inside of case is lined in dark blue velvet, which is faded and slightly worn on the edges. Case measures 6” x 3”x 1”while closed.

Pans are made of brass and measure 1 ¾” in circumference. They are attached to a 5” brass balance bar by thin green cords. Pans hang approx. 5” from bar. The bar has a hook from which the scale could be suspended. Included are some small brass weights. Patina on brass is semi-bright.

This is a wonderful piece of history complete in original case.
