Medical kits of the 1800’s would include trephining tools such as a Hey’s saw (a small saw with one rounded and one straight edge) for cutting the skull. Although by the 1860s the procedure was performed less often, it was still used to treat hemorrhages, sub-dural abscesses, and depressed fractures of the skull.

Total length measures 7”, blade measures 1” x 1 ¾”. Ebony handle has light scuffs. Blade has light surface rust and is maker marked, but not legible.  [sm]
