The set comes housed in a mahogany wood box with brass shield escutcheon at top center, brass hinges and lockplate and two brass reinforcing straps that are held to the box with brass screws. The mix of the dark wood and brass makes an attractive combination. Both side panels are mortised near the front to accommodate swinging brass hooks that help hold the set closed. Both are operable. The lock is not.

The box meas. approx. 9.50 x 4.75 x 1.75 inches. The box is held together by brass screws, shows average surface wear, darker at the corners, and is free of cracks.

When opened the underside of the top is lined with a red velvet pad. The bottom of the box where the instruments are stored is unlined and just plain finished wood. The bottom is section allowing storage of the instruments and accessories. The front of the bottom section has a narrow compartment meas. approx. 8.75 x 1.00 x 1.00 inch. This compartment holds a tweezers and an ebony wood handled scalpel marked “LYNCH & CO.” These are held in place by two small brass racks. There is also a brass knob that allows you to lift the panel with the tweezers and scalpel in place and reveals a storage area for surgical thread and suture needles.

The rest of the lower box is one large compartment and holds the following tools all marked “LYNCH & CO. LONDON:” long hammer with heavy head, bone chisel, long and short knife blades with removable wood handle and a pack of surgical needles with a label that reads “SURGEON’S NEEDLES / ALLEN & HANBURY’S, LTD / LONDON.” There is also a small spool of surgical thread.

All items fit nicely in their respective slots and are in good condition with only light wear from use and light surface mottling.

As best as we can find the Lynch Co. began business in 1879.

Very nice kit in good condition.   [ad]
