Oval shaped gutta-percha box manufactured by the Davidson Rubber Company. An identical box with a similar interior lid label appears on page 224 of “INDIA-RUBBER AND GUTTA-PERCHA IN THE CIVIL WAR ERA” by Mike Woshner.
Box is oval and meas. approx. 7.00 inches long x 3.00 inches wide x 1.75 inches high. The box surface is stippled and the lid has a five-pointed star with raised lettering that reads “DAVIDSON’S PATENT SYRINGE.” Lid is held closed by two hook and eye attachments like those found on cased images of the Civil War period. Cloth lid hinge is separated but this is minor.
Exterior is in excellent condition with only two very minor scuffs.
Interior of the body is unlined while the underside of the lid has a wonderfully large label in excellent condition. Label reads “’THE DAVIDSON SYRINGE / PATENTED MARCH 31, 1857. RE-ISSUED APRIL 25. 1865.” In a large box at center is “No. 1.” This box is flanked by instructions on how to use the syringe. At bottom of the label is “MANUFACTURED BY THE DAVIDSON RUBBER COMPANY, CHARLESTOWN, MASS.”
The box would be an interesting and attractive addition to any Civil War or early medical collection. [ad]
