Mahogany wood box with brass hinges and corner reinforcements. Brass screws hold the box together along the edges. Case meas. approx. 17.00 long x 9.00 wide x 4.00 inches high. Wood is in nice condition with minor surface scratches from age and storage. There are no cracks. Lid is held closed by two brass hooks on the front. At center of the lid is a brass escutcheon engraved with “U.S.A. / MED DEPT.”

Interior has a worn brown felt lining that shows moderate surface dirt. Missing is the top panel that would hide the compartment in the lid. There is no maker’s label.

The lower portion of the kit contains the following (all pieces are Kolbe marked unless otherwise stated,) unmarked tongue depressor, small scalpel with loose blade and broken tip, unmarked small retractor, unmarked field tourniquet, unmarked chain saw with handles, unmarked medium amputation knife, large amputating knife, large catlin, medium catlin, Hey’s saw, 2 unmarked trephine with detachable handles, bone brush, several packages of post-war bandages and a small red leather needle case.

The upper portion of the case has a Snowden & Bros. marked gnawing forceps, 2 bone chisel and bone forceps. All instruments with handles have crosshatched ebony wood handles. Over a dozen other instruments are missing from the set. Those that are present are in good condition.   [ad]
