When in the field, Civil War soldiers carried their rations in a haversack made of cloth, canvas or leather. The haversack was slung over the shoulder and rested on the hip usually with the tin cup buckled on the outside.
The state of Massachusetts issued white canvas haversacks to their soldiers. These haversacks featured a separate interior bag that was to be used for storing items like coffee or sugar. This is the inner bag that attached inside of the haversack with two small buttons. Over the years, the white color has yellowed into a light tan. Bag measures 8 ½” high x 9 ½” at widest point.
The inner bag has stamped in black lettering ¼ inch high "STATE OF MASS." and directly under it in slightly small letters, “INSPECTED”. One half of an inch under that is stamped the word, “ACCEPTED”. Since most haversacks did not survive the war, not very many examples in this condition remain, especially with the state marking. [sm]
