This belt is made of a doubled over piece of khaki canvas that meas. approx. 2.50 inches wide. Attached to the body of the belt are fifty-four 2.00 inch high canvas loops for holding .45 Carbine and Rifle ammunition. One end of the belt has a heavy plain brass buckle while the other has a tongue of russet leather with six adjustment holes. The tip of the leather tongue is marked “WATERVLIET ARSENAL” in two lines. The interior surface of the leather tongue has the carved letters “LC” or “L Co.” The surface of the leather is crazed throughout and the carving is near an adjustment hole so it is a bit difficult to make out.

What makes this belt the 1879 trial model is the attachment of three brass “O” rings to the bottom edge of the belt. These three “O” rings are sewn and riveted into the belt. These rings were meant to be mounts for the trowel bayonet and angular bayonet.

Surfaces show some dirt and wear from age and storage. Present with the belt are five .45-.70 shell casings minus the projectile. There is some verdigris on the brass buckle and casings. Also some of the loops have minor fraying.

It is reported that in 1878 a number of these Model 1876 Cartridge Belts were modified at Fort Abraham Lincoln and used in the 1879 Infantry trials of the single hook suspension for the Rice-Chillingsworth Trowel Bayonet and the standard angular bayonet scabbards. After the trials these modified belts were returned to service.  [ad]
