1860s BRASS SINGLE LOOP BUGLE WITH DOVETAIL SEAM

Item Code: 1043-350

This single loop brass bugle features a lengthwise dovetail seam that is one of the things to look for in a Civil War instrument. Regulations often call for bugles to be only of copper, but both bugles and trumpets were produced in copper and brass, and we see lots of non-regulation instruments in period photos, including the very common use of bugles by cavalry, who in theory were to carry trumpets. The construction and dimensions correspond to a military bugle produced in the 1860s. The bugle stands 16.5” inches tall overall or 14” not counting the pigtail extension and mouthpiece. This one has a simple rolled edge to the bell rather than a floating “garland,” and is pitched in C, like the regulation copper bugle. Fitted with a copper “pigtail” that holds the mouthpiece, the bugle has small, soldered standing brass loop may have once held a short retaining chain. The bugle has on it a red twisted cord with tassels that is not a military bugle cord and was probably added for the look by a collector who was collecting artillery material. We have left the cord on it as it came, but it would be perfectly legitimate to remove it and place it in a cavalry or even infantry display.  (SR)
