General Grant famously said that he knew only two tunes: “one of them is ‘Yankee Doodle,’ and the other isn’t.” Most Americans, however, were swept up in the craze for brass bands that started around 1835 and hit a peak in the 1850s and 1860s. Military bands of the period were almost entirely percussion and brass instruments. Most Civil War regiments marched off to war with a brass band as part of the unit. Even after regimental bands were phased out in late 1862, they were retained at brigade and division levels.

The phenomenon had been introduced from Europe and although American makers quickly caught up and made excellent instruments, European imports were a strong part of the market. This horn is brass with German silver fittings and rotary valves. Most likely a product of eastern Europe or Bohemia, and dating 1855-1865, it would fit a collection of brass instruments of the period or military band instruments. The only significant defects we find are two holes punched through the lower and upper portions of the main tube. This should be well within the abilities of a competent restorer if one wished to return it to playable condition.  [sr]
