This white canvas haversack has a partially visible ink stamp on the underside of the flap that would have read, “STATE OF MASS. / INSPECTED / ACCEPTED.” Only the last word is partially legible, but this the standard marking for this pattern. The bag and cover are one piece, and the cover fastens with two bone buttons sewn to the face of the bag that engage two button holes at the lower corners of the squared cover flap. The shoulder strap is white canvas as well, doubled over, seamed for its length and then sewn in place at the rear upper corners of the bag. The strap shows a blue line along one edge.
Both buttons are in place on the upper front of the bag. The bag shows some light stains and dirt, but no holes. There is one small frayed spot on the edge of the cover at upper left where the flap angles down. The strap is securely in place and very good.
We are not aware of any firm dating for these haversacks, but the marking clearly shows they were a Massachusetts state contracted piece of gear. [sr]
