Stamped brass rectangular militia sword belt plate with spread-winged eagle at center surrounded by a border of twelve stars and a wreath of laurel. The thirteenth star on the plate is on a US shield that is superimposed over the eagle’s chest. This star is hard to see due to a spot of discoloration. The face of the plate has a nice light patina with two spots of discoloration. One has already been mentioned and the other is in the lower left corner. The plate has aged well and the patina adds to the charm of the piece.
The reverse has a narrow tongue and a belt attachment bar with one hook. The other hook is missing.
Overall the plate is a nice example of a pre-war militia plate, many of which went on to see Civil War service.
