This remarkable SNY brass plate specimen is referred to as a New York Militia Infantry enlisted waist belt plate ca. 1861. New York State adopted the oval 1839 pattern plate with raised letters ‘SNY’ for enlisted men shortly after its regular army introduction. This very popular style of plate was widely used by New York’s first volunteer infantry regiments in the Civil War.

Artifact is a non-excavated plate specimen in wonderful original condition that measures 57mm high x 88mm long. Plate is constructed in the die-struck, rolled brass face method and has a lead filed back with brass stud belt hooks, a.k.a. ‘puppy paw’ hooks. Hooks tight and strong. The brass convex accoutrement has 22mm high block letters “S N Y” centered on the face surrounded with a normal double border at the outer plate edge. Face surface has acquired a dark but pleasing chocolate brown patina overall. Tiny areas of light oxidation appear on the face surface along. The letter “Y exhibits a few dings but it does not detract from the overall appearance of this fine plate. A slight border edge roughness is found at the top center portion of the plate. Lead surface is excellent, smooth and hard. No erosion visible at all. No maker’s marks.

This very fine, original SNY oval, brass plate is a wonderful piece that would enhance any military belt plate display or Civil War collection.
