TWO PIECE WAIST BELT PLATE OF PHILADELPHIA MILITIA 1850-1885

$75.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 172-3964

This two piece cast brass tongue and wreath plate bears the initials “N.G.” According to “AMERICAN MILITARY BELT PLATES” by O’Donnell and Campbell the initials stand for Philadelphia’s wealthy independent militia company called the National Grays. They were one of the first local units to adopt this style two piece plate.

The tongue is cast with a keeper that bears a linear decoration while the tongue itself is cast hollow and convex bearing the raised initials “N.G.”

The wreath has the same style keeper and a laurel wreath. The brass within the wreath is stamped with an “S” and a “P”. The reason for these markings is not known. The tongue and wreath fit nicely together.

The brass is clean and in good condition with no major dings or dents.

It is believed that this plate was made by Horstmann Bros. & Co. as it appears in their 1877 catalog.
