Buckle depicts "US", and was used by the Federal army as well as the states. Buckle is oval following the Federal Regulation of 1839, and was designed to secure a belt fitted over a soldier's jacket, used to carry his cartridge and cap box, along with any other items carried on a belt. This die pattern attributed to Pittman and features thick letters, "U" with medium boxy bottom, "S" with rounded openings. Brass plate is stamped on thin sheet brass, then solder filled.  Plate measures 2 ¾” x 1 ½”. Non-dug plate, scarce pattern. Two attachment hooks are present on reverse.

Reverse has maker’s mark, “J.L. PITTMAN”.
